How it works
- Times a year = how often × working days or weeks in the year (× 12 for monthly tasks)
- Hours a year = minutes each time ÷ 60 × times a year × people doing it
- Cost of an hour = hourly pay, or salary ÷ (hours a week × working weeks), plus any employer costs
- Cost a year = hours a year × cost of an hour
- Pays for itself in = one-off cost ÷ (monthly cost of the task − monthly running cost)
Questions
How is a working year worked out?
By default as 46.4 weeks: 52 weeks less the 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a full-time worker is entitled to in the UK, which can include bank holidays. A daily task is counted on each working day in those weeks. You can change the weeks, the days and the hours.
What are employer costs?
The cost of employing someone on top of their pay, such as employer National Insurance, pension contributions and a share of overheads. Add them as a percentage if you want the full cost of an hour, rather than the pay alone.
Can I add more than one task?
Yes, up to ten. The calculator shows each task's cost and the total.
What does the automation section show?
If you enter what it would cost to automate the work, and any monthly running cost, it shows how many months it would take to pay for itself and what you would save over three years.
Is anything I enter stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is stored. If you press the button to ask about automating a task, it fills in the enquiry form on this page, and nothing is sent unless you press Send.
