How it works
- Euro to another currency = amount × the ECB rate for that currency
- Between two other currencies = amount × (ECB rate for the currency you want ÷ ECB rate for the currency you have)
- Cost hidden in an offered rate = (reference rate − offered rate) ÷ reference rate
- Change over the period = (latest rate − first rate in the period) ÷ first rate
The ECB publishes reference rates for about 30 currencies against the euro once each working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time. We keep a copy for up to six hours and show the date the rates belong to. Rates are shown to six significant figures, and amounts to the usual decimals for each currency. The working shows each step.
Questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From the European Central Bank's euro foreign exchange reference rates. The ECB publishes them once each working day, at around 16:00 Central European Time, for about 30 currencies against the euro. Our own server fetches the official file, so your browser never contacts anyone else. Rates between two currencies other than the euro are worked out from the euro rates.
Why is my bank's rate different?
Banks, card providers and bureaux de change set their own rates, usually with a margin built in, and markets move all day. The reference rate is a benchmark published for information, not a rate anyone will exchange at. Use the rate check to see how far an offer is from it.
How does the rate check work?
Enter the rate you were offered, or the amount you would receive. The calculator compares it with the reference rate and shows the difference as a percentage and in money. A difference of a few per cent is the cost of the exchange that is not shown as a fee.
Are the rates live?
No. They change once a working day, and do not change at weekends or on ECB holidays. The date of the rates is always shown next to the result. For a trade or a payment, use the rate your provider gives you at the time.
Which currencies are covered?
Every currency in the ECB's daily file, around 30, including the pound, US dollar, euro, yen, Swiss franc and the Australian, Canadian and New Zealand dollars. Currencies the ECB does not publish, such as the UAE dirham, are not included.
Is anything I enter stored or sent anywhere?
No. The amounts you type stay in your browser. The only request the page makes is to our own server for the published rates.
What this is, and what it is not
The rates on this page are the European Central Bank’s reference rates, published for information only. They are not an offer to exchange currency, and BrightDragon Systems Ltd does not provide currency exchange or payment services. Rates you are offered will differ. Check them with your provider before you exchange or pay.
